4.4.1 Cells connected in series
This is done
to increase the effective voltage output of the battery. The battery output is the arithmetic sum of
each individual cell.

When four
cells each of 1.5 volts are connected in series, the total voltage is (4 x 1.5
V) or 1.5 + 1.5 + 1.5 + 1.5 = 6V.
